DVRs
[info]thevirtualjim
I was just thinking, DVRs in many ways are better than VCRs, but in one big area they are a disadvantage...you can't bring a 'tape' to someone else's house to play a recording!

I think what would be neat is to have a ubs drive, or something similar, that can be plugged into any DVR to copy a show, then plug it into another DVR to play it. Right now, the best I know of it to hook a DVR to a PC through a tv tuner card and record it into an .avi file, but then you are stuck with having to watch it on the computer, AND recording it to the comp form the DVR can only be done in real-time, so 1 hour to copy a 1 hour show, etc.

Publication

The best I can tell is that this is the original article about the translucent goldfish that was artificially selected for it's lack of pigment:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1239358/The-goldfish-Japanese-scientists-develop-fish-hearts-brains-seen-translucent-skin.html

All of the other articles about it are either direct copies of this one or paraphrasing.

I want the paper these groups published on the fish. I cannot find it. Any help? Thanks.

I am pretty sure this is the guy, but none of the papers are about this fish.

A funny thing happened...
[info]thevirtualjim
...on the way to my office.

Soon after I started my trip to the office, some guy cut me off so bad I had to slam on the brakes and almost go off the road to avoid him. I was kinda pissed, and he turned out to be going in the same direction I was. I was thinking of following and messing with him (like I did to another guy a number of years ago, and I will tell that funny story if you like), but I figured it wasn't worth it.

So, he turned out to be making almost the exact same trip as I was and I was thinking 'that would be funny if he was my 1st patient today. That would be annoying to deal with'. Well he turned into a side street about a block before my office. I went to the office parking lot, got to the office, etc, and my patient got in about 10 mins after I was there (also 10 mins early for his appointment, which was nice) and he asked 'do you have a Nissan? cause I cut someone off and it looked kinda like you.' So I replied 'no, I have a Toyota.' and left it at that.

Also, funny, which I don't know if he picked up on, was I asked him near the end of the visit if he had any questions and he said 'no', so I started to say something, then he goes 'oh, sorry to cut you off, but I just remembered a question...' and I found that kind of amusing/ironic.

WE GOTTA UNPACK YOU GUYS
[info]sekar_pryors wrote in [info]sf4m
Okay, so I'm leaving for Stony later today, (though I've been making tentative plans with people during the week itself), so expect some moving to start happening on thursday at noonish. I'll be on the Island from tuesday night TO perhaps the next tuesday, if we don't get the moving done, at the latest. The quicker we get the job of unpacking complete, the sooner the world can rejoice.

There's a lot that needs to get done.

Note: It may happen even on wednesday, but i imagine the fact that I'm alerting you now may probably prevent that from happening. Either way, there's a good chance that I may meet up with someone for the day instead. But let me know if wednesday works for you.

ALSO let me know if you're going to show up for a day.

Be ready to do work.

and of course, if you guys wanna do something during the weekend/any night of the moving, i really encourage that, since i'm going to be going to a danky little apartment in west all by my lonesome. ;_;

maybe fnm?

An new interview with MST3k's Joel
[info]peacelovefandom wrote in [info]mst3k
I recently had a chance to see Joel Hodgson's latest venture, Cinematic Titanic, give a special live performance for New Year's Eve. As part of the promotional blitz, Joel became available for interviews and I was lucky enough to get one with him!

An Interview with MST3k and Cinematic Titanic's Joel Hodgson

In it he discusses fandom cons, weird things he got sent to him while doing the show, how Cinematic Titanic formed, and what recent movie he thought was a "hack job."

Enjoy!

P.S. The Cinematic Titanic show was GREAT and I highly recommend trying to catch one of their performances.

Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)

Good starter MST3K for small kids?
[info]laridian wrote in [info]mst3k
We have two kids ages 6 and 8. They've heard us talking about "Misty" (="MST") and our son (the 6yo) did see the Hot Slot Bots car race between Crow and Tom somehow. For the most part, we haven't run these in front of the kids because they can have adult concepts. It's one thing to explain a joke, it's another thing to explain Joel's drug jokes or any of the more adult entendres.

However, the kids have asked if there's a MST they can watch. They're smart kids, but we understand that MST requires a lot of cultural knowledge, and at this age, wedgie jokes are high humor. That's OK by us, we figure we'll just hit Pause a lot to explain the jokes. But it would be good if we didn't have too much drug/adult humor to have to explain to the under-10 set.

My first thought was some of the fantasy movies like Magic Sword or The Day the Earth Froze. However, maybe some of the shorts would be OK too, and quicker to sit through.

What would be good choices for this situation? Or would it be better to tell them "Sorry, you'll have to wait until you're older"?

This strip is just too funny.

Pete (playing R2-D2): I roll a 01101
GM: What?
Pete: Custom dice
GM: Are they really labeled in binary? Let me see.
Pete: Of course. I got this set especially for playing robot characters.
GM: Are they chrome??
Pete: Titanium.
